De graflegging van Christus
Quinten Metsys·1525
Historical Context
De graflegging van Christus (The Entombment of Christ) is among Metsys's most emotionally intense devotional works, demanding the expressive grief and physical tenderness at which he excelled. The Lamentation and Entombment were among the most theologically charged subjects in Christian devotional painting — the moment when Christ's body is fully human yet on the threshold of divine transformation. Metsys had a particular gift for anguished facial expression, developed through his study of Flemish emotional tradition and Italian Renaissance figure types, and the grief-struck mourners became one of the most admired aspects of his religious painting.
Technical Analysis
Mourning figures surround the recumbent Christ, faces contorted in grief and hands reaching toward the body. Metsys's combination of Flemish textural detail with softer Italian-influenced modelling creates a powerful emotional register. The palette is deliberately rich and sombre throughout.
