Triptyque de la Crucifixion
Historical Context
Goswin van der Weyden created this Crucifixion Triptych for the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon. The triptych format was the standard altarpiece configuration in the Netherlandish tradition, with the central Crucifixion scene typically flanked by donor portraits, saints, or subsidiary Passion scenes. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
The triptych demonstrates Goswin's competent continuation of the Brabantine workshop tradition, with the Crucifixion rendered in bold colors and clear spatial construction across the three interconnected panels.
