Historical Context
Juan de Flandes, the Netherlandish painter who served as court painter to Isabella I of Castile, created this Crucifixion around 1510. Juan de Flandes brought the refined technique of the Bruges school to Spain, producing some of the most exquisitely detailed paintings in Iberian art. Juan de Flandes was a Flemish-trained court painter to Queen Isabella of Castile, whose small altarpiece panels combine Flemish detail and naturalism with a restrained Spanish courtly refinement.
