Anna Chernysheva and daughter

This portrait of Anna Chernysheva and her daughter from around 1774 depicts a Russian noblewoman who visited Western Europe as part of the cultural exchange between Russia and the West. Kauffmann's international clientele included many Russian aristocrats. Kauffmann's refined oil handling favored cool, clear colors and gracefully elongated figures that drew on classical sculpture and Raphael's serene compositions, executed with a smooth, controlled touch that avoided all painterly roughness.

The double portrait demonstrates Kauffmann's ability to render maternal tenderness with Neoclassical grace, combining naturalistic characterization with idealized composition.
