Saint François d'Assise en prière by Jusepe de Ribera

Saint François d'Assise en prière

Jusepe de Ribera·1700

Historical Context

Saint Francis in prayer — the order's founder kneeling in contemplation, often before a crucifix or skull — was one of the most frequently commissioned subjects in Counter-Reformation art. Ribera's version captures the mystic's total absorption in divine contemplation, a state Franciscan theology described as the soul's direct encounter with God. The rough brown habit and gaunt features that Ribera emphasizes reflect the historical Francis's radical commitment to poverty and physical mortification.

Technical Analysis

Extreme chiaroscuro reduces the composition to the essential encounter between the saint and the divine presence implied by the light source. The coarse texture of the Franciscan habit is rendered with impasto brushwork that creates almost tactile roughness.
