Madonna and Child
Allegretto Nuzi·1370
Historical Context
Allegretto Nuzi, a leading painter of the Marche region in central Italy, produced this Madonna and Child around 1370 for a local patron. Now in the Pinacoteca Civica Bruno Molajoli in Fabriano, the work reflects the artistic culture of this important Marchigian town, which would later produce Gentile da Fabriano. Allegretto synthesized influences from both Florentine and Sienese traditions, creating a distinctive regional style that balanced monumental form with decorative refinement.
Technical Analysis
Tempera and gold on panel. Allegretto's technique features rich chromatic harmonies and elaborate punchwork decoration in the gold ground, with the Virgin's drapery rendered in flowing Gothic curves that soften the underlying Giottesque volumes.
