Capilla Real Altarpiece: Holy Family
Juan de Flandes·1496
Historical Context
This Holy Family panel formed part of the Capilla Real Altarpiece commissioned around 1496 for the Royal Chapel in Granada, the tomb complex Ferdinand and Isabella were preparing for the Spanish crown. Juan de Flandes — Flemish by training, Spanish by adoption — produced devotional panels of intimate scale that embodied the queen's personal piety. The Holy Family subject reinforced dynastic imagery: a mother, father, and child whose domestic unity mirrored the political unity Isabella sought in her kingdom. The Royal Chapel of Granada remains the burial church of the Catholic Monarchs and still houses works from this original commission.
Technical Analysis
Oil and tempera on wood panel with the delicate Flemish miniaturist technique, showing precise rendering of domestic detail — the Christ child's robes, Mary's veil, Joseph's aged features — within a compact format designed for close-range private devotion.
