Triptych of Saint Michael
Juan de Flandes·1505
Historical Context
Juan de Flandes painted this Triptych of Saint Michael around 1505 for the Diocesan Museum of Salamanca. After Queen Isabella's death in 1504, Juan de Flandes continued working in Castile, producing altarpieces for Spanish churches that brought the refined Netherlandish technique he had honed at the royal court to provincial patrons. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
The triptych demonstrates Juan de Flandes's characteristic combination of Netherlandish technical precision with Spanish devotional intensity, presenting the archangel with luminous surface effects and meticulous detail.
