testate di cataletto, san galgano by Domenico Beccafumi

testate di cataletto, san galgano

Domenico Beccafumi·1511

Historical Context

The testate di cataletto depicting San Galgano by Domenico Beccafumi, dated 1511 and now at the Museo Civico di Montepulciano, are end panels from a bier — the decorated supports used in funeral processions and the display of coffins in Sienese religious confraternities. San Galgano was a Sienese knight-turned-hermit who became a local patron saint after his death in 1181, and his image on bier ends connected the deceased in the procession to local sacred patronage and the hope of intercession. Beccafumi, who would become the defining painter of Mannerist Siena, was in the early phase of his career when he produced these functional but carefully executed panels.

Technical Analysis

The bier-end format imposes a narrow vertical or horizontal field that Beccafumi exploits through bold figure placement and strong silhouetting of the saint against a simplified background. Despite the utilitarian function of the object, the paint handling shows Beccafumi's characteristic attentiveness to light — surfaces catch illumination with an alertness unusual for confraternity furniture painting. The relatively small scale required tight, precise brushwork.
