Miracolo di San Pietro martire
Bernardo Daddi·1350
Historical Context
This panel by Bernardo Daddi depicts a miracle of Saint Peter Martyr, the Dominican inquisitor canonized in 1253 whose cult was actively promoted by the Order of Preachers throughout the fourteenth century. Daddi's narrative scenes of Peter Martyr's miracles belong to a tradition of Dominican-commissioned works that circulated widely in Tuscany. Now in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, this panel likely formed part of a larger predella or altarpiece complex celebrating the saint's posthumous interventions.
Technical Analysis
Painted in tempera on panel with gold ground, Daddi employs compact narrative staging characteristic of Trecento predella scenes. The figures display his trademark combination of solid Giottesque forms with refined, almost miniaturist detail in faces and architectural settings.
