santa cecilia martirizzata
Bernardo Daddi·1326
Historical Context
Bernardo Daddi depicted the martyrdom of Saint Cecilia around 1326, illustrating the death of the Roman noblewoman who became patroness of music and one of the most venerated female saints of the medieval Church. Cecilia's legend, in which she survived multiple execution attempts before succumbing, was a favorite subject of Trecento narrative painting. This panel likely formed part of a larger hagiographic cycle now dispersed across multiple collections.
Technical Analysis
Egg tempera on panel with gold details. Daddi renders the martyrdom scene with his characteristic narrative clarity, balancing the violence of the subject with the formal restraint expected of sacred art, using gestures and spatial arrangement to guide the viewer through the story.
