Saint Augustine between Saint Nicholas of Tolentino and Saint Stephen
Allegretto Nuzi·1350
Historical Context
Allegretto Nuzi's Saint Augustine between Saint Nicholas of Tolentino and Saint Stephen, in the Pinacoteca Civica Bruno Molajoli in Fabriano, reflects the Augustinian order's influence in the Marches region during the mid-fourteenth century. The inclusion of Nicholas of Tolentino, an Augustinian hermit canonized in 1446 but venerated locally much earlier, points to the panel's commission by an Augustinian community. Nuzi was Fabriano's most important Trecento painter, whose work bridged the artistic traditions of Florence, Siena, and the Adriatic Marches.
Technical Analysis
The tempera-on-panel painting features Nuzi's characteristic gold-ground treatment with finely tooled halos and decorative borders. His figures combine Giottesque three-dimensionality with the elegant linear rhythms of Sienese painting, rendered in a warm palette of reds, blues, and gold.
