Eleazar préfère la mort
Antoine-Jean Gros·1792
Historical Context
Eleazar Preferring Death from 1792 at the Musée Magnin is an early religious history painting by Gros, produced during his student years under Jacques-Louis David. The biblical subject of Eleazar’s martyrdom during the Maccabean revolt allowed the young painter to demonstrate his command of dramatic narrative and muscular figure painting. Characteristic of the artist's mature approach, the work displays monumental scale, vivid reportorial color, Romantic energy in figure groups, combining David's Neoclassical training with the excitement of actual military events.
Technical Analysis
The early work shows the influence of David’s neoclassicism in its strong compositional structure and anatomical precision. Gros’s characteristic Romantic energy is already discernible in the dramatic lighting and emotional intensity.
