Portrait of Floris van Egmond (1469-1539), Count of Buren and Leerdam
Jan Gossaert·1519
Historical Context
Jan Gossaert painted this Portrait of Floris van Egmond, Count of Buren and Leerdam around 1519 for the Mauritshuis. Gossaert served as court painter to Philip of Burgundy and later to Adolph of Burgundy, giving him access to the highest ranks of Netherlandish aristocracy and making him one of the most important portrait painters of his generation. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
Technical Analysis
The portrait presents the nobleman with Gossaert's characteristic combination of Netherlandish precision and Italianate monumentality, achieving a sense of aristocratic authority through the careful rendering of the count's features and costume.
