Hans von Marées painted this Self-Portrait with Yellow Hat during his mature Italian period, when he was living in Rome and Naples and developing the monumental figure style that set him apart from the mainstream German academic painting of his day. Von Marées largely rejected the Salon and the official exhibition system, working in obscurity for much of his career but influencing the next generation of German painters profoundly.
