Die drei Reiter II: Hl. Hubertus by Hans von Marées

Die drei Reiter II: Hl. Hubertus

Hans von Marées·1885

Historical Context

Hans von Marées's Die drei Reiter II: Hl. Hubertus (St. Hubert of the Three Riders, 1885) depicts the patron saint of hunters encountering the miraculous stag with a crucifix between its antlers — the vision that converted the Frankish nobleman into a Christian saint. Von Marées treats this traditional narrative not as devotional scene but as archetypal encounter between the human hunter and the sacred animal — a mythological rather than historical reading of the legend. His simplified, monumental style strips the narrative to its essential symbolic structure: man, horse, and miraculous deer in landscape.

Technical Analysis

Like the companion Martin panel, the Hubert painting is handled in Von Marées's severely simplified late manner: broad planes of warm color, monumental figure forms that reduce detail to structural essentials, a landscape that provides symbolic rather than topographic context. The miraculous stag and its cruciform vision would be the compositional focus of the encounter — the sacred meeting point of hunter and hunted. His palette maintains the warm limitation of the series, achieving archaic gravity through deliberate reduction.
