Johann Zoffany's Venus and Adonis from around 1760 is an early work predating his establishment as the leading conversation piece and theatrical portrait painter in Britain. Zoffany, born in Germany and trained in Rome, arrived in England around 1760 and quickly found success painting actors and aristocratic families. His mythological subjects from this period reflect his European academic training and his ambition to work in the grand manner before his English career channeled him toward the more lucrative genres of conversation pieces and theatrical portraits. The Venus and Adonis subject had an august tradition from Titian onward.
Technical Analysis
Zoffany's Italian training is evident in the classical figure types and confident compositional organization of the mythological group. The flesh painting likely shows the influence of his Roman studies, with a warmer, more continental quality than the cooler English tradition he would soon absorb.
