From Hisøya near Arendal
Edvard Munch·1886
Historical Context
From Hisøya near Arendal shows a coastal landscape from the island of Hisøya on the Skagerrak coast, where Munch spent part of his summer in 1886. The southern Norwegian coastline, with its flat-topped skerries and luminous summer sky, offered him a subject quite different from the dramatic fjord scenery associated with Norwegian Romanticism. This relatively minor early work demonstrates his range of location and his interest in the quieter registers of coastal light as he was developing his pictorial language.
Technical Analysis
The composition is organized as a simple horizontal sequence of rock, water, and sky, each zone given a distinct but closely related tonal value. Munch's brushwork at this stage is controlled and descriptive rather than expressive, building the coastal atmosphere through the accumulation of short, consistent marks across the surface.
