Karen Bjølstad
Edvard Munch·1885
Historical Context
Karen Bjølstad, painted in 1885 and now in the Art Museums of Bergen, depicts Munch's maternal aunt who became the household's caretaker after the death of his mother Laura in 1868 and subsequently of his sister Sophie in 1877. Karen Bjølstad was a constant presence in the Munch family's difficult domestic life, managing their limited finances and providing emotional stability during a childhood defined by illness and loss. Munch painted her with a quiet respectfulness that registers her role within the family's emotional economy, though the Naturalist constraints of 1885 prevent the psychological depth of characterisation he would later achieve.
Technical Analysis
The composition is centred and relatively static — the sitter frontal and contained within a neutral interior space — a format that suited the respectful register of the commission. The technical handling is solidly conventional, demonstrating Munch's growing competence at this stage without yet the experimental boldness that would distinguish his mature portrait work.
