Royal Academicians by Johann Zoffany

Royal Academicians

Johann Zoffany·1772

Historical Context

Johann Zoffany painted Royal Academicians around 1772, depicting the founding members of the Royal Academy of Arts assembled in the life class — but notably excluding the two female members, Angelica Kauffmann and Mary Moser, who appear only as portraits on the wall, their gender making their actual presence in the life class impermissible. The painting is a major historical document of the early Academy and of the gender exclusions that shaped its founding culture. The assembled academicians — Reynolds, West, Zoffany himself, and others — are depicted in the informal working environment of the life class, the nude male model providing the occasion for a painting that is simultaneously group portrait and institutional history.

Technical Analysis

Zoffany renders the complex group scene with his characteristic precision, capturing individual likenesses of over thirty Academicians within the institutional setting. The careful rendering of the studio interior, casts, and models creates a detailed record of academic art education.
