Johann Zoffany painted Royal Academicians around 1772, depicting the founding members of the Royal Academy of Arts assembled in the life class — but notably excluding the two female members, Angelica Kauffmann and Mary Moser, who appear only as portraits on the wall, their gender making their actual presence in the life class impermissible.
