The Marriage Feast at Cana
Juan de Flandes·1500
Historical Context
Juan de Flandes painted this Marriage Feast at Cana around 1500, during his service as court painter to Queen Isabella of Castile. Born in the Low Countries, Juan brought Netherlandish technical refinement to the Spanish court. His small devotional panels for Isabella's portable altarpiece are among the finest works of the Hispano-Flemish tradition. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with the miniaturist precision and jewel-like colors characteristic of Juan de Flandes. The domestic setting and banquet details are rendered with Netherlandish attention to still-life elements and textile textures.
