Saint Michael; The Mass of Saint Gregory; Saint Jerome by Master of the Legend of Saint Catherine

Saint Michael; The Mass of Saint Gregory; Saint Jerome

Master of the Legend of Saint Catherine·1490

Historical Context

The Master of the Legend of Saint Catherine's Saint Michael; Mass of Saint Gregory; Saint Jerome, painted around 1490 and now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, brings together three important devotional subjects within a single multi-compartment panel: Saint Michael the Archangel, the Mass of Saint Gregory, and Saint Jerome in his study. The Mass of Saint Gregory — a vision of the man of sorrows appearing to Pope Gregory the Great during mass — was among the most important devotional images of the late medieval period, directly associated with indulgences and with the elevation of the host in the Eucharistic liturgy.

Technical Analysis

Oil on panel with the precise Flemish technique of the late fifteenth century. The three compartments — Michael, the Mass of Gregory, Jerome — may be separated by architectural framing or present as a triptych or multi-panel arrangement.
