Ill-Matched Lovers
Quinten Metsys·1520
Historical Context
Metsys produced several versions of the ill-matched lovers theme, each varying the specific dynamic between the foolish old man and the calculating young woman. This version, now in the National Gallery of Art, shows the young woman reaching for the old man's purse while he gazes at her adoringly — a visual joke about desire and deception. The subject reflected the commercial culture of Antwerp, where new wealth created anxieties about trust, deception, and the commodification of human relationships.
Technical Analysis
Half-length figures pressed close to the picture plane engage the viewer as a complicit witness to the scene. The smooth, almost enameled surface finish contrasts with the deliberately ugly characterization of the old man's face.
