The Holy Family
Jan Gossaert·1507
Historical Context
Jan Gossaert painted this Holy Family around 1507, during his early career before his transformative trip to Italy in 1508-09. Also known as Mabuse, Gossaert would become the first Netherlandish painter to fully integrate Italian Renaissance classicism into Northern art. This early work still shows the influence of his Bruges and Antwerp training. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with rich Netherlandish detail and luminous coloring. The figures show Gossaert's early mastery of precise drawing and fabric rendering before his exposure to Italian monumental forms.
