The Vision of Saint Catherine of Alexandria

Don Silvestro dei Gherarducci was a Camaldolese monk and manuscript illuminator at the monastery of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Florence, one of the most important centers of book production in Trecento Italy. This panel depicting the Vision of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, showing the saint's mystical marriage to Christ, reflects the contemplative spirituality of his monastic milieu. Don Silvestro's panel paintings are rare survivals that show how the refined, jewel-like technique of manuscript illumination could be translated to larger devotional formats.
