The Madonna and Child
Historical Context
Don Silvestro dei Gherarducci was a Camaldolese monk at Santa Maria degli Angeli in Florence, renowned primarily as one of the finest illuminators of the Trecento. This Madonna and Child panel of around 1350, now in the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, translates his refined miniaturist sensibility to a larger devotional format. The work reflects the contemplative spirituality of Florentine monastic art, produced within a community that also included Lorenzo Monaco in the next generation.
Technical Analysis
Executed in egg tempera on panel with gold ground, the painting reveals Don Silvestro's miniaturist training in its delicate facial modeling, precise linear drapery, and jewel-like color harmonies of ultramarine and vermilion.
