Aften i stuen

Aften i Stuen — Evening in the Living Room — belongs to the series of Strandgade apartment interiors that defined Hammershoi's mature output between 1898 and 1909. An evening interior at Statens Museum for Kunst would have shown the apartment's rooms under artificial light, when the quality of illumination shifted from the cool diffuse daylight Hammershoi preferred to the warmer, more directional light of gas or electric lamps. This tonal shift interested him: the evening interior was the same space as the daylight interior but transformed into something more intimate and enclosed. The work dates to 1904, well within his most productive Strandgade period.

Evening lighting required Hammershoi to warm his palette toward ochres and amber tones while maintaining the tonal restraint characteristic of his work. Contrasts between illuminated and shadowed surfaces become sharper under artificial light, and he exploits these contrasts to organise the room's architecture.
