Tree Trunks. Arresødal near Frederiksværk, North Zealand

Hammershøi's 'Tree Trunks, Arresødal near Frederiksværk, North Zealand' (1904) is one of his most minimal landscape paintings, depicting bare or near-bare tree trunks at the lakeside estate of Arresødal with an almost abstract economy of means. North Zealand's lake district was a landscape of distinctive beauty, and Hammershøi responded to its stillness with paintings of radical compositional simplicity. Tree trunks as vertical elements reducing landscape to pure geometry anticipate twentieth-century abstract approaches while remaining firmly within Nordic naturalism. The Statens Museum for Kunst holds this as an extreme example of his landscape simplification.

The composition is reduced to vertical tree trunks against a horizontal ground, with minimal colour variation — greys, pale ochres, and cool greens in Hammershøi's characteristic muted range. The paint surface is smooth and unhurried, each tree trunk given solidity through careful tonal gradation without showy technique. The overall effect is of landscape reduced to structural essence.
