J.F. Willumsen

J.F. Willumsen was one of the leading Danish Symbolist painters and a figure of considerable ambivalence within Danish art circles: admired, provocative, and temperamentally quite unlike the introverted Hammershoi. This 1901 portrait at Statens Museum for Kunst documents a professional relationship between two major figures in Danish modernism who inhabited overlapping but distinct circles. Willumsen had spent time in Paris and Pont-Aven and brought influences from Gauguin and Symbolism that differed markedly from Hammershoi's quieter, more reclusive practice. Painting Willumsen put Hammershoi in dialogue with these influences through the act of portraiture.

Portraying a fellow artist of strong individual character required Hammershoi to balance his tendency toward psychological abstraction with the demands of recognisable likeness. His greyed, controlled palette gives even a dynamic personality a quality of stillness, bringing Willumsen into the tonal world of the Strandgade interiors.
