Chan-ku-wash-te-mine (Good Road Woman) by Antonio Zeno Shindler

Chan-ku-wash-te-mine (Good Road Woman)

Antonio Zeno Shindler·1887

Historical Context

Chan-ku-wash-te-mine (Good Road Woman) is notably different from the other Shindler portraits in the Smithsonian series: a female subject, providing a rarer record of a Native American woman in the context of these Washington delegation paintings. Women rarely appeared in the official portrait commissions, making this canvas particularly significant as a historical document. Good Road Woman was presumably a wife or family member of one of the male leaders who visited Washington, her portrait a small but important counterpoint to the masculine military focus of most frontier documentation.

Technical Analysis

Shindler applies his standard documentary approach to the female subject, with careful attention to her traditional dress and ornaments. The frontal composition and neutral background are consistent with his other Smithsonian portraits.
