Chetan-woa-kutoa-mang (The Hawk Who Hunts Walking) by Antonio Zeno Shindler

Chetan-woa-kutoa-mang (The Hawk Who Hunts Walking)

Antonio Zeno Shindler·1887

Historical Context

Chetan-woa-kutoa-mang (The Hawk Who Hunts Walking) was another Lakota subject painted by Shindler as part of the Smithsonian's Native American portrait series in 1887. These portraits form a collective record of Lakota leadership at a moment when the Standing Rock and Pine Ridge agencies were being established — the end of the free-ranging Plains life and the beginning of the reservation period. As historical documents, they carry an importance that transcends their modest artistic ambitions, preserving the faces of leaders whose world was being forcibly transformed.

Technical Analysis

Shindler maintains his consistent documentary approach, rendering the subject's features with careful precision and giving particular attention to the regalia and personal adornments that distinguish the individual's identity and status.
