The Morning Praver. Copy ? replica ?
Jean-Baptiste Greuze·c. 1765
Historical Context
This version of The Morning Prayer, possibly a copy or replica from around 1765, testifies to the enormous popularity of Greuze's devotional subjects. Multiple versions of his most successful compositions circulated widely, and the question of autograph originals versus studio copies remains a challenge for Greuze scholarship. Characteristic of the artist's mature approach, the work displays theatrically posed figures, expressive faces registering emotion with unsubtle directness, a palette ranging from Rococo pastels in early works to colder, more sober tones after the Revolution.
Technical Analysis
The devotional pose and luminous treatment of the white garment follow Greuze's established formula, though subtle differences in handling may indicate workshop participation.
