Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints
Bernardo Daddi·1339
Historical Context
Bernardo Daddi's Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints (1339) is a fully signed and dated altarpiece that represents the mature phase of this prolific Florentine master's career. Created just two years after Giotto's death, when Daddi had emerged as Florence's leading painter, the work demonstrates how he adapted Giotto's monumental vision to the more intimate, emotionally accessible format preferred by mid-century patrons. The Minneapolis panel preserves its original Gothic frame structure.
Technical Analysis
Executed in egg tempera on panel with extensive gilding, the enthroned Madonna is rendered with Daddi's characteristic gentle modeling and warm color harmonies. The saints flanking the throne display individualized features, while the tooled gold ground features elaborate punch-work patterns.
