Saint Mary Magdalen by Quinten Metsys

Saint Mary Magdalen

Quinten Metsys·1525

Historical Context

This later Saint Mary Magdalene from around 1525 at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp represents Metsys’s mature treatment of a subject he returned to throughout his career. Comparing this with his earlier versions reveals how his style evolved—from the tighter, more linear manner of his early work to the softer, more atmospheric handling of his final decade, when Italian influence had fully permeated his art. Metsys's religious paintings combine the Flemish tradition of meticulous naturalism with compositional ideas absorbed from Italian Renaissance models.

Technical Analysis

The late technique employs softer modeling and more atmospheric tonal transitions than the earlier Philadelphia version, demonstrating Metsys’s progressive absorption of Italianate sfumato into his Netherlandish foundation.
