The Martyrdom of Saint John
Quinten Metsys·1511
Historical Context
The Martyrdom of Saint John shows the evangelist’s legendary ordeal of being plunged into boiling oil, a dramatic subject that tested painters’ ability to depict physical suffering and miraculous survival. Metsys painted this panel in 1511 for what is now the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp, possibly as part of the same altarpiece complex that includes his panel of Saint John. The subject’s violence is unusual within Metsys’s generally restrained devotional oeuvre.
Technical Analysis
The dramatic scene of immersion in the cauldron challenges Metsys to paint fire, steam, and human agony—subjects far from his usual compositional quietude. The executioners’ faces are characterized with the same observational acuity he applied to his genre figures.
