Man of Sorrows
Aelbrecht Bouts·1500
Historical Context
Aelbrecht Bouts painted this Man of Sorrows around 1500, continuing the devotional image type perfected by his father Dirk Bouts in Leuven. The imago pietatis showing the suffering Christ in a half-length format was designed for close personal meditation. Aelbrecht maintained his father's workshop and style with little innovation but consistent quality. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with meticulous Bouts workshop technique and restrained emotional expression. The close-up format and careful rendering of Christ's wounds follow the established Leuven workshop formula.
