Triptych of Antonius Tsgrooten
Historical Context
Goswin van der Weyden painted this Triptych of Antonius Tsgrooten in 1507 for the abbot of Tongerlo Abbey. The triptych format served as the abbot's personal devotional altarpiece, combining religious imagery with donor portraiture. As Rogier van der Weyden's grandson, Goswin upheld the family's prestigious painting tradition in the Brabant region. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel in triptych format with careful integration of devotional imagery and donor portrait. The technique maintains the refined drawing and luminous palette of the Van der Weyden workshop lineage.
