Historical Context
This 1773 portrait of George III at the Hermitage depicts the British monarch during the period when colonial tensions in America were approaching crisis. Dance's access to the royal court made him one of several painters entrusted with creating the king's official image. Dance's portraits combined the formal conventions of Grand Manner portraiture with a cooler, more austere palette and sculptural figure treatment that reflected his years studying in Rome under the influence of Pompeo Batoni.
