King Christian IX of Denmark with family
Laurits Tuxen·1886
Historical Context
Laurits Tuxen was a Danish court painter whose large-scale royal group portraits secured his international reputation among European monarchies. This 1886 portrayal of King Christian IX of Denmark with his extended family — which included future royals of Britain, Russia, and Greece — was a diplomatic and artistic commission of the highest order. Christian IX was known as 'the father-in-law of Europe' due to his children's marriages into ruling houses across the continent. Tuxen's ability to manage large groups of distinguished sitters while maintaining individual likenesses made him indispensable to the royal courts of the era.
Technical Analysis
Tuxen organizes the large group with academic clarity, each figure individually rendered while the whole composition maintains order and legibility. His technique is polished and assured — careful drawing, smooth paint application, accurate representation of court dress and decorations. Lighting is even and flattering throughout.
