The coronation of Mary
Puccio di Simone·1350
Historical Context
Puccio di Simone's Coronation of the Virgin, painted around 1350, represents one of the most beloved subjects in Trecento Florentine art. Puccio was a follower of Bernardo Daddi and active member of the Florentine painting community, producing altarpieces that balanced devotional gravity with decorative richness. The Coronation theme — Christ crowning the Virgin in heavenly glory — served as a triumphant centrepiece for altarpieces, affirming Mary's supreme intercessory role in Catholic theology.
Technical Analysis
Tempera and gold leaf on panel with the careful layered technique of the Florentine Daddi workshop tradition. Punch-work haloes and tooled gold ground create luminous surface effects, while the symmetrical celestial composition employs the warm colour harmonies typical of mid-Trecento Florence.
