Madonna and Child
Aelbrecht Bouts·1500
Historical Context
Aelbrecht Bouts painted this Madonna and Child around 1500 in Leuven, continuing the devotional Madonna types established by his father Dirk Bouts. The Leuven workshop maintained production of such devotional panels well into the 16th century. These images served the continued demand for Marian devotional objects in the Low Countries. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with the precise Bouts workshop technique and restrained emotional expression. The Madonna type follows established prototypes with careful attention to surface finish and tonal subtlety.
