Near Quillebeuf
Historical Context
Near Quillebeuf from 1824 depicts a scene along the Seine estuary in Normandy, where the river widens toward the Channel. Bonington frequently painted along this stretch of the Norman coast, capturing the distinctive atmospheric effects where river meets sea. Bonington, who died at twenty-five in 1828, achieved a technical mastery of watercolor and oil that astonished contemporaries including Delacroix, with whom he shared a Paris studio and who acknowledged his profound influence.
Technical Analysis
The broad, low-lying landscape allows the luminous sky to dominate, with reflections in the water rendered through transparent glazes that create shimmering atmospheric effects.
