Head of an Old Man
Quinten Metsys·1525
Historical Context
This head of an old man from around 1525 in Barcelona’s Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya may be a fragment, a character study, or a preparatory work for a larger composition. Metsys’s interest in the physiognomy of aging—particularly male faces marked by time and experience—is evident throughout his career, from his grotesque satires to his sympathetic portrait studies. The Catalan museum acquired the work through the international art market. Metsys was the leading portraitist of early sixteenth-century Antwerp, a city then at the center of European commerce and culture.
Technical Analysis
The old man’s lined face is rendered with the observational precision that Metsys brought to both his satirical and sympathetic treatments of age. The limited composition focuses entirely on the expressive potential of weathered features.
