Saint Michael Vanquishes the Antichrist by Jaume Huguet

Saint Michael Vanquishes the Antichrist

Jaume Huguet·1455

Historical Context

Saint Michael Vanquishes the Antichrist, from Huguet's altarpiece production and now in the MNAC, engages the apocalyptic theological tradition of Michael as the angelic warrior who defeats the forces of evil at the end of time. The subject drew on the Book of Revelation and on the popular late medieval devotional theology of the angelic hierarchy, in which Michael occupied a supreme military function as God's champion against demonic power. Huguet's treatment brings his gift for dramatic figure composition to one of the most charged subjects in the Catalan Gothic pictorial repertoire, investing the celestial combat with both cosmic drama and material splendour.

Technical Analysis

The dynamic tension of the combat scene — Michael armoured and dominant, the Antichrist prostrated below — is organised through a strong vertical axis that runs from the archangel's raised arm down through the defeated figure. Gold and vivid colour are deployed with maximum intensity to convey the supernatural drama of the celestial battle.
