Saint Francis before Pope Honorius III
Sassetta·1340
Historical Context
Sassetta's Saint Francis before Pope Honorius III depicts the moment when Francis received papal approval for his religious rule, a pivotal event in Franciscan history. This panel formed part of Sassetta's great altarpiece for the church of San Francesco in Borgo Sansepolcro, commissioned in 1437 and completed around 1444. Though Sassetta worked in the 15th century, his style consciously evoked the spiritual intensity and decorative beauty of earlier Sienese Gothic masters like Simone Martini and the Lorenzetti brothers.
Technical Analysis
Tempera and gold on panel with Sassetta's distinctive combination of Gothic decorative elegance and selective Renaissance spatial awareness. The architectural setting frames the papal audience with convincing depth, while the figures retain the elongated grace and jewel-like color typical of the late Sienese Gothic tradition.
