Two wings of an altarpiece (Moses and the Burning Bush & Gideon and the Fleece)
Aelbrecht Bouts·1490
Historical Context
Aelbrecht Bouts, son of the great Dieric Bouts, produced these altarpiece wings depicting Moses and the Burning Bush alongside Gideon and the Fleece around 1490 in Leuven. These Old Testament typological scenes were commonly paired as prefigurations of the Virgin Birth. Aelbrecht maintained his father's workshop and continued the family's distinctive compositional approach. This work belongs to the High Renaissance, when the innovations of the preceding century were synthesized into works of monumental clarity and ideal beauty.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel employing the detailed Netherlandish technique inherited from Dieric Bouts. The landscape backgrounds show atmospheric perspective while figures display the calm, contemplative character typical of the Bouts workshop.
