Head of Christ
Aelbrecht Bouts·1500
Historical Context
Aelbrecht Bouts painted this Head of Christ around 1500, a devotional image type the Bouts workshop produced in quantity. The frontal bust of Christ, based on legendary acheiropoieta (images not made by human hands), was one of the most widely reproduced devotional types in Northern European art. The Prado provenance reflects Spanish royal collecting of Netherlandish art. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with the meticulous Bouts workshop finish and controlled emotional expression. The frontal presentation and symmetrical features create an icon-like quality appropriate to this devotional type.
