Saint Michael

Saint Michael in MNAC is likely associated with Huguet's Sant Miquel del Port altarpiece or a related commission, representing the archangel in the conventional imagery of armoured warrior with dragon underfoot that was central to Catalan late Gothic iconography. Huguet's Saint Michael panels were among his most sought-after works: the combination of gilded armour, elaborate tooling, and the dramatic confrontation of celestial and infernal forces provided maximum visual impact for the guilds and parish churches that commissioned them. Michael was also patron of the weighing of souls at the Last Judgment, connecting martial and judicial functions within a single intercessory figure.

The gilded armour of the archangel is treated with Huguet's characteristic combination of punched decorative patterns in the gold areas and carefully modelled paint over the armour's relief surfaces, creating a layered material richness that gives the figure simultaneous physical and spiritual weight.
