Kreuztragung Christi
Juan de Flandes·1500
Historical Context
Juan de Flandes painted this Christ Carrying the Cross around 1500 as part of his Passion cycle for the Castilian court. The Via Dolorosa scene shows Christ burdened by the cross on the road to Calvary. Juan's Netherlandish precision brings microscopic detail to the crowd and landscape surrounding the suffering Christ. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Juan de Flandes's miniaturist technique and luminous coloring. The processional composition combines narrative complexity with the refined surface finish characteristic of his courtly devotional panels.
