Podřipsko (aus der Mappe „16 Ansichten tschechischer Landschaften 'Česka Krajiná'“)
Historical Context
Podřipsko refers to the region around Říp mountain in central Bohemia — a solitary volcanic hill rising dramatically from the flat Elbe plain that holds extraordinary significance in Czech mythological tradition. According to the founding legend of the Czech people, the patriarch Čech climbed Mount Říp and, seeing the promised land below, led his people to settle in Bohemia. Engelmüller's inclusion of the Podřipsko landscape in his 1902 portfolio was therefore a powerful gesture, connecting landscape painting to the deepest layer of Czech national myth. The isolated hill of Říp dominates the flat surrounding plain, making the mythological claim visually legible.
Technical Analysis
The composition is necessarily dominated by the distinctive conical profile of Říp, rising from a flat plain in a way that makes its mythological significance visually legible. Engelmüller places the hill carefully within the composition, using the flat plain to isolate and emphasize its solitary character.
